John O’Dreams

John O’Dreams although often called a traditional Irish song, was written by Bill Caddick, using a tune by Tchaikovsky. The titular central character is equivalent to the Sandman, a fictional character who sends people to sleep. The song portrays all people as being “equal in sleep”:

The Prince and the plowman, the slave and freeman
All find their comfort in old John O’Dreams

Obviously, sleep is also a metaphor for death, both as an eventual equalizer of all things, and for the allusion to a “crossing over,” as in a river, a prevalent theme in Western spiritual beliefs.

The most popular arrangements are by English singer/songwriter Bill Caddick. Singers Christy Moore and Jean Redpath also recorded versions. The enchanting arpeggiated melody is based on Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6, “The Pathetique”, and is thought to have originated in a Russian folksong.

Lyrics

When midnight comes and people homeward tread

Seek now your blanket and your feather bed

Home comes the rover, his journey’s over

Yield up the night time to old John O’Dreams

Yield up the night time to old John O’Dreams

Across the hill, the sun is gone astray

Tomorrow’s cares are many dreams away

The stars are flying, your candle is dying

Yield up the darkness to old John O’Dreams

Yield up the darkness to old John O’Dreams

Both man and master in the night they’re one

All things are equal when the day is done

The prince the plowman, the slave the freeman

All find their comfort in old John O’ Dreams

All find their comfort in old John O’ Dreams

When sleep it comes the dreams come running clear

The hawks of morning cannot reach you here

Sleep is a river, flow on forever

And for your boatman choose old John O’Dreams

And for your boatman choose old John O’Dreams

When midnight comes and people homeward tread

Seek now your blanket and your feather bed

Home comes the rover, his journey’s over

Yield up the night time to old John O’Dreams

Yield up the night time to old John O’Dreams

Room Raiders

Room Raiders is a dating/reality series on MTV. On the show, three single men or women have their rooms inspected, or “raided” by another single man or woman (usually a member of the opposite sex, but some episodes are gay-themed). The raider does not meet or see any of the three singles (any personal photographs of the contestant are removed from the room or covered with a smiley face sticker) and chooses to go on a date with one of them based on the contents of their rooms. The three contestants watch and comment, while sitting in a truck, as their rooms are inspected. After the raider has finished with each of the rooms, the three contestants then raid the raider’s room. Finally, the raider confronts the three contestants and makes his or her choice.

The first episode was filmed at Tulane University, and featured Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey as aids to the contestants for promotion. The first seven seasons were Room Raiders (in the New York metropolitan area), Room Raiders II, Room Raiders: Miami, Room Raiders: Hotlanta (in the Atlanta area), Room Raiders: California, Room Raiders: Texas, and Room Raiders: Florida. The current season is entitled Room Raiders: Arizona. Starting with the Miami season, episodes were given themes such as Twins, Beauty and the Freaks, Double Trouble, Hidden Beauty, Opposites Attract, Threes a Kind and celebrity guests.

TNA superstar Lance Hoyt appeared as a contestant for Room Raiders.
Zac Efron appeared as a contestant.

Working paper

A working paper is a preliminary scientific or technical paper. Often, authors will release working papers to share ideas about a topic or to elicit feedback before submitting to a peer reviewed conference or journal. Sometimes the term working paper is used synonymously as technical report. Working papers are typically hosted on websites, belonging either to the author or the author’s affiliated institution. The United Nations uses the term “working paper” in approximately this sense for the draft of a resolution.

Working papers can also refer to the documents required for a minor to get a job in certain states within the United States. Such papers usually require the employer, parent/guardian, school, and a physician to agree to the terms of work laid out by the employer.

Working papers can also refer to the documents required on an audit of a company’s financial statements. The working papers are the property of the accounting firm conducting the audit. These papers are formally referred to as Audit Documentation or sometimes as the audit file. The documents serve as proof of audit procedures performed, evidence obtained and the conclusion or opinion the auditor reached (AU 339.05). For more information, see AS 3 and AU 339 or www.aicpa.org.

Temurah (Kabbalah)

Temurah is one of the three ancient methods, the other two are Gematria and Notarikon, used by the Kabbalists to rearrange words and sentences in the Bible to derive the esoteric substratum and deeper spiritual meaning of the words.

Temurah has a second meaning also when pertaining to Judaism, particularly Hebrew mysticism, which is in association with the art of word-changing. This entails the changing of letters in certain words to create a new meaning for a Biblical statement.

Photographic studio

A photographic studio is both a workspace and a corporate body. As a workspace it is much like an artist’s studio, but providing space to take, develop, print and duplicate photographs. Photographic training and the display of finished photographs may also be accommodated in a photographic studio. Accordingly, the workspace may possess a darkroom, storage space, a studio proper - where photographs are taken, and a display room, as well as space for other related work.

As a corporate entity, a photographic studio is a business owned and represented by one or more photographers, possibly accompanied by assistants and pupils, who create and sell their own and sometimes others’ photographs.

Since the early years of the 20th century the corporate functions of a photographic studio have increasingly been called a “photographic agency,” leaving the term “photographic studio” to refer almost exclusively to the workspace.

Australian Bank Notes Tax Act 1910

The Bank Notes Tax Act of 1910 effectively ended the era of private currency in Australia.

It is a Federal law that imposes on all bank issued currency a tax of ten per cent. The tax applies on “all bank notes issued or re-issued by any bank in the Commonwealth after the commencement of this Act, and not redeemed”.

The effect of the tax was to bring to an end the historical practice of private sector currency creation in Australia.

Prior to the act of 1910 the dominant form of currency in Australia was state issued currency and bearer redeemable promissory notes issued by private banks and denominated in pound sterling.

The Act allowed the Federal government Treasurer to issue notes in denominations of 10s., £1, £5, and £10 and any multiple of £10. These were to be legal tender and payable in gold coin on demand at the Commonwealth Treasury.

This act perpetuates the effective prohibition of private currencies in Australia.

Stanford Bunny

The Stanford Bunny is a computer graphics test model developed by Greg Turk and Marc Levoy in 1994 at Stanford University.

The Bunny consists of data describing 69,451 triangles determined by 3D scanning a ceramic bunny figurine. The data can be used to test various graphics algorithms; including polygonal simplification, compression, and surface smoothing. While the Stanford Bunny is a standard test data set, it does have limitations. These include its simplicity by today’s standards (only 69,451 triangles), that it is manifold connected, and that it has holes in the data (some due to scanning limits and some due to the object being hollow).

The model was originally available in .ply (polygons) file format with 4 different resolutions, 69,451 polygons being the highest.

Standard of care

Contents

For the English law, see standard of care in English law.

In tort law, the standard of care is the degree of prudence and caution required of an individual who is under a duty of care. A breach of the standard is necessary for a successful action in negligence.

The requirements of the standard are closely dependent on circumstances. Whether the standard of care has been breached is determined by the trier of fact, and is usually phrased in terms of the reasonable person. It was famously described in Vaughn v. Menlove (1837) as whether the individual “proceed[ed] with such reasonable caution as a prudent man would have exercised under such circumstances”.

Professional standard of care

In certain industries and professions, the standard of care is determined by the standard that would be exercised by the reasonably prudent manufacturer of a product, or the reasonably prudent professional in that line of work. Such a test (known as the ‘Bolam Test’) is used to determine whether a doctor is liable for medical malpractice.
see pg 36

Children

A special standard of care also applies to children, who are held to the behavior that is reasonable for a child of similar age, experience, and intelligence.

Redundant code

Redundant code is a computer programming term for code that is executed but has no effect on the output of a program (dead code is the term applied to code that is never executed).

Some developers also apply this term to what is essentially duplicate code. The argument being that the second and subsequent copies of functionally the same code are redundant because they could all be encapulated in (for instance) a function definition.

IDisk

iDisk is a service offered by Apple to all .Mac members that enables them to store their digital photos, movies and personal files online. .Mac users get a total storage amount of 10GB for e-mail and iDisk storage.

iDisk integrates with Mac OS X appearing as a network drive mounted automatically on the desktop. Mac OS X v10.3 and v10.4 allow users to use their iDisk when offline, and synchronize with it when they go online. One of iDisk’s benefits is its close integration with Mac OS X; however the Macintosh Finder is unnecessary when accessing or modifying a user’s iDisk, leading people to use FTP clients instead.

Folders

  • The “Sites” folder of a .Mac iDisk contains the files created by HomePage, the .Mac online web authoring tool.
  • The “Web” folder of a .Mac iDIsk contains the files created by iWeb, part of the iLife suite.
  • The “Software” folder of a .Mac iDisk contains .Mac exclusive software, such as GarageBand Jam Packs.
  • The “Public” folder of a .Mac iDisk can be used to host downloads.

The “Public”, “Sites” and “Web” folders are the only ones which can be accessed by people other than the iDisk owner, but the “Public” folder can be made password protected via the .Mac Preference Pane in Mac OS X.

Backup

Included with iDisk in the .Mac bundle is Backup, a software utility that allows you to backup local files to an iDisk. The software can also be used to restore files from the iDisk, or any other drive/location selected in the backup app.

Benzoxazole

Benzoxazole is an aromatic organic compound with a molecular formula C7H5NO, a benzene-fused oxazole ring structure, and an odor similar to pyridine. Benzoxazole has no household use. It is used primarily in industry and research.

Being a heterocyclic compound, benzoxazole finds use in research as a starting material for the synthesis of larger, usually bioactive structures. It is found within the chemical structures of pharmaceutical drugs such as flunoxaprofen.

Its aromaticity makes it relatively stable, although as a heterocycle, it has reactive sites which allow for functionalization.

Baggage claim

The baggage claim area is, in airport terminology, the area of an airport where one claims one’s baggage from the aircraft after a flight. The area is usually in a restricted zone and within the zone before clearing customs.

Most of the time, the baggage claim area contains baggage carousels that deliver any checked baggage to the passenger. The baggage claim area will also usually contain the airline customers service counter for claiming items that are too large to fit on the carousel or to report missing baggage.

In some airports, passengers are required to display their baggage check receipt so that it can be matched against the bag they are trying to remove from baggage claim. This serves two purposes: first it improves security, and secondly it helps to prevent passengers from leaving with a bag that looks like theirs but is not.

In areas handling international arrivals, the baggage claim is typically located after the area where the passport is stamped and before customs, so that all baggage can be inspected by customs agents, but the passenger does not have to handle heavy baggage while moving through the passport booth. Because of the need to clear customs, all arriving international passengers’ baggage is claimed here and can be re-surrendered to the airline for connecting flights on the other side of customs, unless the passenger is an airside transit passenger in a country that permits such.

Domestic baggage claims are usually located alongside car rental desks and airport exits, and only passengers at their final destination claim their bags here. In most large airports in the United States and in some small ones as well, the domestic baggage claim is located on a different floor than the ticket counter, usually lower.

Technology Resource Mobilization Unit

The Technology Resource Mobilization Unit, also known as “TReMU” or “Linux Force,” is part of an effort to overcome proprietary computer technology in Pakistan. In 2002 the government initiated a task force, composed primarily of volunteers, to encourage the use of open source software, to disseminate information to private users and business about how to use Linux, and to convert government services to a free software basis. Each group has national and regional coordinators. Meetings, seminars and conferences are held to propose and debate public policy ideas. TReMU includes academics, developers, and technology professionals from the Pakistan Linux Users’ Club. The Pakistani government announced its intentions through the press and promoted the effort through an ad in the Karachi-based, English-language newspaper Dawn, which declared that the team “will come with proposals to the government [for] funding such as the creation of user-friendly client/server software, training strategies, local language software development, the induction of LINUX into [the] basic syllabi, etc.”

Scanner art

Scanner art is art made by placing objects on a flatbed scanner and scanning them. There has been some debate as to whether scanner art is a form of digital photography. As the scanner has very little Depth of Field and a constant light all over the surface, it is very different from photography in fact.

Flat bed scanners lend themselves very well to the making of collage. Whereas previously collage meant the adhering together of essentially flat elements to construct the two dimensional image, scanned elements can be arrayed face down on the glass bed of the scanner to produce imagery. In the hands of an artist scanner collage is no less versatile a technique as any other technique in the visual arts. Almost everything can be placed on a scanner, from parts of body to plants. Some artists do collage afterwards. A few scanned elements are then merged to create new images.
